Travel & directions

Getting to Tijuana is easier than you think.

Fly into San Diego, get picked up by our driver, cross the border in 5–15 minutes. That's the whole journey. The complicated part of medical travel is the part we handle. No passport required — just your REAL ID or birth certificate.

Where to fly

Two airport options.

Most patients fly into San Diego (SAN) — easier, more direct flights, our drivers know it cold. A few patients fly into Tijuana (TIJ) directly via the Cross-Border Xpress (CBX) bridge.

Recommended · 90% of patients

San Diego (SAN)

More flights · easier

Direct flights from most U.S. cities. Our driver meets you at baggage claim and drives across the San Ysidro border — most patients are at the hospital within about 40 minutes of landing.

  • 200+ daily flights from across the U.S.
  • Pickup included · driver waiting at baggage
  • Border crossing handled by our driver
  • ~30 min from SAN to facility
Alternative · CBX

Tijuana (TIJ) via CBX

For some patients

The Cross-Border Xpress (CBX) is a pedestrian sky-bridge connecting San Diego directly to Tijuana airport. Useful if your origin city has cheaper TIJ-bound flights or if you prefer the dedicated medical-travel lane.

  • Smaller airport · fewer direct flights
  • CBX pass required (~$30, included in your package)
  • ~15 min from TIJ to facility
  • Often used by Volaris, Aeroméxico patients
The border

What to expect crossing.

As a U.S. citizen, you cannot be denied re-entry to the United States. Border crossing is straightforward and our drivers handle everything. Learn about your legal rights →

5–15

Minutes to Mexico

Going south is super fast — usually 5–15 minutes. Returning to USA takes 30 min–2 hours depending on time of day, but you'll never miss your flight. We build in plenty of buffer time.

REAL ID

Or Birth Certificate

You need either a REAL ID driver's license (⭐ symbol) OR a birth certificate. Passport is recommended but NOT required. See all ID options →

Driver

Handles the questions

Our driver speaks fluent Spanish and English, knows the border officers, and handles any routine questions. You stay in the vehicle for the whole crossing.

FMM

Tourist permit

Mexico requires a Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) for stays. Your driver helps process this at the border — included with your package.

No

Driving yourself

Possible but not recommended. U.S. car insurance doesn't cover Mexico. Border lines northbound can be 1–3 hours. Our included transport eliminates these issues.

SENTRI

If you have it

SENTRI / Trusted Traveler members get a fast lane northbound. Tell your coordinator — we can use this lane on your return trip.

Driving instead

If you'd rather drive yourself.

Some local patients (Southern California, Arizona) drive themselves. It works — but with caveats. Park on the U.S. side, walk across, and our driver picks you up at the pedestrian exit.

  • Park at Border Station Parking ($10–$15/day) on Camino de la Plaza
  • Or San Ysidro Parking — slightly cheaper, slightly farther walk
  • Walk across the pedestrian bridge — 5–10 minutes
  • Our driver meets you at the Mexico-side pedestrian exit
  • For Tijuana airport flights, use CBX bridge from San Diego

We don't recommend driving your own car into Mexico unless you have Mexican auto insurance. The savings rarely justify the hassle.

Once you're across the border

Our drivers take it from there.

Door-to-door transport between airport, hotel, and hospital — all included. 99.7% on-time. Bilingual drivers. Read about Pompeii transport →
